PostSecret News

This is from the PostSecret newsletter I subscribe to, I'm amazed by the amount of secrets!!

200,000plus

This picture was taken last week. It was the first time I invited a photographer to come to where I store all the secrets. The silver case I am holding was the original container I bought for the postcards when I started the project. I never imagined I would need to store more than the 500 postcards it holds. What you see behind me is nearly a quarter of a million secrets.

Word of the Day

The word for May 19 is scraper bike
A relatively recent phenomenon from the Bay area (specifically Oakland) in which people modify bicycles to resemble (either functionally, aesthetically or philosophically) the famed "scrapers" of the hyphy movement.
Man, you see the homemade spinners on that scraper bike? Shit is tight!

Zillows

This is another cute product from the people who made the coloured flame candles, they're called Zillows and they are zoo-animal shaped pillows for children.

They come in 5 fun shapes, pig, elephant, dog, giraffe & horse. My personal favourite is the giraffe. :-) They're all so cute though!

Herbal One

A newish weight-loss system that works by limiting food intake to good for you things and a whole bunch of supplements. A lot of it has to do with water-weight, but I think the end result is based on the person's perseverance and determinations more than the merit of the program.

It costs about $200-$400 a month in supplements not counting any of their special food or the cost of healthy food.

Song of the Week

"4 Minutes" - Madonna
(feat. Justin Timberlake, Timbaland)

[Timbaland:]
I'm outta time and all I got is 4 minutes
(Fricki fricki)
4 minutes eh
[x8]

Ha ha
Yeah
Ha ha
Breakdown come on

[Justin Timberlake:]
Hey
Uh
Come on
Madonna

[Madonna:]
Come on boy I've been waiting for somebody to pick up my stroll

[Justin:]
Now don't waste time, give me desire, tell me how you wanna roll

[Madonna:]
I want somebody to speed it up for me then take it down slow
There's enough room for both

[Justin:]
Girl I can hit you back just gotta show me where it's at
Are you ready to go? (Are you ready to go?)

[Madonna and Justin:]
If you want it
You've already got it
If you thought it
It better be what you want

If you feel it
It must be real just
Say the word and
I'm gonna give you what you want

[Madonna:]
Time is waiting

[Justin:]
We only got four minutes to save the world

[Madonna:]
No hesitating
Grab a boy

[Justin:]
Go grab your girl

[Madonna:]
Time is waiting

[Justin:]
We only got four minutes to save the world

[Madonna:]
No hesitating

[Justin:]
We only got four minutes huh four minutes
So keep it up keep it up
Don't be a prima donna

[Madonna:]
You gotta get em a heart
Tick tock tick tock tick tock

[Justin:]
That's right keep it up keep it up

[Madonna:]

Tick tock tick tock tick tock
Sometimes I think what I need is a you intervention

Yeah

[Justin:]
And I know I can tell that you like it and that it's good
By the way that you move
Oh hey

[Madonna:]
The road to hell is paved with good intentions
Yeah

[Justin:]
But if I die tonight at least I can say I did what I wanted to do
Tell me how 'bout you?

[Madonna and Justin:]
If you want it
You've already got it
If you thought it
It better be what you want

If you feel it
It must be real just
Say the word and
I'm gonna give you what you want

[Madonna:]

5 Bullshit Stories the Whole Internet Fell For

5 Bullshit Stories the Whole Internet Fell For

13-year-old-credit-card.jpgThe internet loves bullshit. While many of its denizens will brag of their skepticism, claim thousands of readers make the best fact-checkers, and say the web holds the mainstream media accountable, the fact remains that made-up bullshit still drives huge traffic, if it's marketed right. Hence, "13-year-old Steals Dad's Credit Car to Buy Hookers," a realistic-looking "news story" posted on some financial site no one had ever heard of before called monkey.co.uk. The fact that there were no sources other than this dodgy domain didn't stop the story from making the front page of Digg and Fark and racking up probably hundreds of thousands of views. Then "real" news sites began picking it up. It made the UK Sun's print edition. This tale was invented by an online marketer to boost a client's SEO ranking. And no one on Digg or anywhere else BUSTED the hoax. Nor do they bother to debunk any of the rest of the snappily headlined bullshit that makes the rounds every day. Four more examples, below.
  • 2. Rememberthe twins who accidentally married each other! A classic bullshit story that probably garnered CNN millions of views.
  • 3. The man regrowing his own finger story! It involved pixie dust and still everyone who linked bought it.
  • 4. Aliza Shvarts violating human biology by impregnating herself a million times and then inducing abortions with magic herbal remedies. Not even the abortion pill, but herbs. Honestly.
  • 5. Jenkem.
Most of these stories were eventually revealed as frauds, but usually not until days later—always well after everyone had forwarded them to everyone they knew. And this shit happens every day. Especially with almost any story involving nude people doing something outrageous, especially in far away places. (That one's on Fark!)
So. If you see egregious bullshit linked to on some high-traffic message board or blog, let us know, and we will publicly shame everyone involved.

Word of the Day

The word for May 23 is staycation
A vacation that is spent at one's home enjoying all that home and one's home environs have to offer.

Word of the Day

The word for May 22 is earlybirditude
the (often annoying to others who don't share it) overly happy attitude of early birders - often associated with a great eagerness to call 7am committee meetings and to embark on sales-related shopping trips that mimic dawn raids on enemy encampments
"it's his earlybirditude i can't stand - he doesn't seem to realize that if i'm awake at 6am it's because i'm still up from the day before, not because i had a sudden urge to go running"

"only the most manic earlybirditude could make the shopping mall seem appealing the morning after thanksgiving"

Teletoon Short

it's of this woman who's pregnant and stranded on a desert island and she then has the baby and sends a note out in a bottle asking for help and this guy on aother islands gets it and carves a canoe out of a tree and goes and gets her and the baby

The song in it's original French:

"J'ai Pour Toi Un Lac" - Gilles Vigneault

roughly translated (courtesy of http://babelfish.yahoo.com)

"For You, I've a Lake"

J' have for you a lake some share in the world A beautiful very blue lake Like an eye open over the major night A sensitive to the cold crystal Who trembles with your name as trembles sheet With breeze d' autumn and song d' winter S' there reflects time, s' there die and s' there My days with l' gather; place, my nights with l' towards. J' have for you, very far A walk on a soft sand Thousands of step without noises, parade Towards one does not know where And fingers of the wind of the whole seasons Y drew as on our faces Vaguenesses of the day split of cruisings Beautiful shipwrecked men that we will make there. J' have for you demolishes But remade the thousand castles unceasingly D' a friendly cloud which for my princess Would be made boat Would be made apple tree, would be made crown Would be made basket full of fruits vermeils And me I will be that which gives you Ground and the moon with the sun. J' have for you l' love some share in the world Does not let it be lost with the round.

Song of the Week

"Nine in the Afternoon" - Panic at the Disco

Back to the street where we began
Feeling as good as lovers can, you know
Yeah we're feeling so good

Pickin’ up things we shouldn’t read
It looks like the end of history as we know
It’s just the end of the world

Back to the street where we began
Feeling as good as love, you could, you can

Into a place where thoughts can bloom
Into a room where it's nine in the afternoon
And we know that it could be
And we know that it should
And you know that you feel it too
'Cause it's nine in the afternoon

And your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afternoon

Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good

Back to the street
Down to our feet
Losing the feeling of feeling unique
Do you know what I mean?

Back to the place
Where we used to say
Man it feels good to feel this way
Now I know what I mean

Back to the street, back to the place,
Back to the room where it all began, hey
Back to the room where it all began
'Cause it's nine in the afternoon

Your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
Just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afternoon

Behind the Idols

A really interesting article from Christianity Today on American Idol:

Behind the Idols
We've got an interview this week that's sure to thrill American Idol fans and hopefully even hold the interest of you non-fans. In fact, there was so much great content that I simply couldn't throw it all your way at once; I had no choice but to split it into two parts.

As you know, there have been several Christians who have not only tried out for television's biggest singing competition, but have also made it into the Top 12. A number of them were available to chat during GMA Week, including Mandisa, Chris Sligh, and Phil Stacey. While it would have been great to interview them individually, we caught a vision of the bigger picture: what if we talked to the three of them for a broader piece about their collective Idol experience? Then we started getting excited about the questions we could ask: Did they all audition for the same reason? What were they hoping to accomplish? What relationships were formed behind the scenes? Were they able to share their faith with others on the show—fellow contestants, as well as producers and staff? What life lessons did they take from the experience?

Sure enough, these three had plenty of stories to share. Hence the lengthy two-part interview, which still won't include all of their personal anecdotes.

I know from various e-mails and conversations that there are a few misconceptions about what it means to have a platform as a Christian artist. Some say that you're irrelevant unless you're a major success. Others say that unless you boldly proclaim Christ from the stage, you're not really a "Christian artist."

These three contestants have dispelled those myths. Though none of them won the top spot in the competition, they've all gone on to record deals and have indeed become relevant to niche audiences. And though they were operating in an environment that limited some of what they could say on stage, they were able to build relationships and affect lives behind the scenes—to the extent where the show now seems more receptive to Christianity with the recent performance of "Shout to the Lord."

It was truly a pleasure to chat with Mandisa, Chris, and Phil because it confirmed something that I've long been passionate about. God has placed each of us in a unique set of circumstances that allows us to serve him in our own way. Sometimes that means we affect the lives of a few; sometimes it means we affect many. The point isn't so much the platform as it is to reflect Christ to others wherever he has placed us—even if that happens to be the biggest reality show on television, and even if it means gently witnessing behind the scenes.

Speaking of Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey, their new albums are two of the reviews featured this week. We've also got some worship projects from newcomer Sheri Carr, as well as gospel artists Alvin Slaughter and Tye Tribbett & G.A. Plus, former Petra frontman John Schlitt offers his first solo project in 12 years. Last but not least, don't miss our introductory interview with acclaimed new alternative rock band After Edmund.

Have a great week, and a happy Mother's Day to all the moms!

Dove's 'Real' Women: Fakes?

Dove's 'Real' Women: Fakes?

dove.jpegYou know that Dove "Campaign for Real Beauty," which featured women slightly less skeletal than the average model, and therefore demonstrated that Dove is the greatest, most big-hearted company ever in the world? Well now there's a scandal about it! A new New Yorker story about Pascal Dangin, the world's "premier retoucher of fashion photographs," contains this tidbit on Dove's campaign, which ostensibly celebrates authentic, unadulterated womanhood:
"It is known that everybody does it, but they protest," Dangin said recently. "The people who complain about retouching are the first to say, 'Get this thing off my arm.' " I mentioned the Dove ad campaign that proudly featured lumpier-than-usual "real women" in their undergarments. It turned out that it was a Dangin job. "Do you know how much retouching was on that?" he asked. "But it was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone's skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive."
Why, that would make Dove a bunch of rank hypocrites! A spokeswoman for Dove's ad agency tells Ad Age that "We are unsure right now what he did," and adds:

"There was no retouching of the women," she said. "If there was a hair that was up in the air, that might have been the kind of retouching that was done. But until I know what he actually worked on, I can't comment on it."
If only for the excessive amount of self-righteousness that accompanied the PR effort surrounding this ad campaign, let's sincerely hope these retouching allegations are true.

El Caminito del Rey (The King's pathway)

This is an absolutely incredible walkway built in incredibly high up and incredibly narrow, the video of it is kind of long, but worth the watch... I have no idea how the cameraman is even walking along parts of it, it is literally a steel beam over a huge fall!

http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1438490562

"El Caminito del Rey (The King's pathway) is a walkway, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Álora in Málaga, Spain. The name is often shortened to El Camino del Rey.

History

In 1901 it was obvious that the workers of the Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls needed a walkway to cross between the falls, to provide transport of materials, vigilance and maintenance of the channel. Construction of the walkway lasted four years. It was finished in 1905.
In 1921 the king Alfonso XIII had to cross the walkway for the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce, and it became known by its present name.

The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. It is one meter in width over a 700-meter fall, and over time it has lost its handrail. Some parts of the walkway have completely collapsed and have been replaced by a beam and a metallic wire on the wall. Many people have lost their lives on the walkway in recent years. After four people died in two accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed the entrances. However, adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway."

Christian Book Stores Going out of Business

I haven't had the money to go buy my VeggieTales videos lately, so I hadn't really noticed how hard it would be to buy them if I did have the money, until recently when i decided I wanted to go find out what was available only to find out that both the Christian bookstores in my city had closed down. I thought how strange this was and then I was checking my e-mail and came across this article from Christianity Today:

Trivia by Ken Tate

"Why are some things called pairs when there is only one of them? One example is a pair of pants? Or, what about a pair of scissors, not one scissor?" -- Lena

"Webster's Dictionary generally has two definitions of a "pair," Lena. 1) Two corresponding persons or items, similar in form or function and matched or associated: a pair of shoes. 2) One object composed of two joined, similar parts that are dependent upon each other: a pair of pliers.

It's easy to understand why scissors are called a "pair" -- there are two joined, similar parts that are dependent upon each other. But pants, underwear or other such clothing are similar because of the two parts making up where the left and right legs go through. The two leg openings make them all a "pair."

Now, I wonder, why don't we call a shirt a "pair of shirts" since it similarly has two parts that are dependent upon each other? Ah, the idiosyncrasies of the English language!" -- Ken Tate
