Happy September 30th!!!

Hey all,
I know I haven't posted as much or as often as I should. You'd be amazed how many drafts of blogs I have in my account. I'll be getting around to posting them all in the next week or so. Life's been crazy around here, two roomies moving out, switching shifts at work and all the other daily activities have made time for blogging not so much.

I wanted to wish you all a happy September 30th! Today is my favourite day of the year, it's a perfect day, not too summer and not too fall. The leaves changing colours (even though in this province they're all yellow!) the air crisp with northern winds but still bringing sunny daytime highs in the 20's. The sky is the perfect shade of blue. Not too bright or too cloudy, or too unclear. A boy once told me my eyes look like a morning sky and it was in September so that makes the blue of the sky that much more my favourite. :)

I spent today at work sadly, although on the way out the door I looked to the left at the corner and saw the bell tower of La Belle Notte outlined by the sun that was not yet too high in the sky, it was very pretty and reminded me of the beauty of creation. I enjoyed my walk to work today. I had a nice lunch and left work on time for once. I went to a play at the University tonight, it was quite good, and I connected with some old friends. It was a very good day. Also I finally have a kitchen table in my house and my bookcases in my room! By the end of the weekend I should be all organized and ready to start living all on my own. :)

I hope your day was as enjoyable as mine!

Dog in jail

So did you hear? Dog the Bounty Hunter got arrested for bounty hunting in Mexico! Apparently down there bounty hunting is an illegal crime. The funny part is though that the "hunt" in question took place 3 years ago on one of his televised shows. That's the justice system at work for ya.

The article:

Duane "Dog" Chapman Was Barkin' Up The Wrong Tree
By Mike Baron
Sep 24, 2006

Duane "Dog" Chapman, TV's 'Bounty Hunter,' was barkin' up the wrong tree when he went bounty hunting in Mexico. Chapman is now trying to cut a deal to avoid extradition to Mexico. Duane "Dog" Chapman is hoping to escape charges of illegal detention and conspiracy in his apprehension of a cosmetics company heir there three years ago, his lawyer indicated.

According to the AP, bounty hunting is considered a crime in Mexico.

Chapman and his two co-stars on the show "Dog The Bounty Hunter," were arrested and jailed in Hawaii last week. Chapman, his son Leland Chapman and Timothy Chapman were brought into custody on suspicion of illegal detention and conspiracy.

Mona K. Wood, publicist for Chapman's show Dog The Bounty Hunter, insists he will be vindicated, "He arrests the bad guys - and he is definitely not one of them."

The charges date back to Chapman's apprehension of Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Puerto Villarta, Mexico, in 2003. Luster had fled the Us after being convicted of raping three women, and his capture catapulted Chapman to fame and led to his show being commissioned.

Us Marshals spokeswoman Nikki Credic says the trio face extradition to Mexico. They were arrested shortly after Luster's capture and released on bail, but they failed to return for court hearings in Puerto Villarta. Mexican authorities wanted Luster turned over to them in 2003, but Chapman refused.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has until Oct. 16 to file the needed paperwork in support of their extradition, but Chapman's attorney, Brook Hart, hopes to resolve the issue before then.

According to the AP reports, Chapman indicated that he would be willing to offer an apology, pay a fine, forfeit the bail he posted in Mexico and make a charitable contribution, Hart said.

'Dog' posted close to $1,300 bond for his release, and based on "flawed legal advice" thought he was free to leave the country and Mexican authorities would have no further interest in him, Hart added.

Chapman and his family spoke out last week, TMZ.com has it.

Song of the Week

"God Bless the American Housewife" - SheDaisy

Look at me, I'm gorgeous in my housecoat with my coffee cup
I bend to get the paper, every neighbor's tryin' to check me out
Look at me, I'm lovely as I wave beside my minivan
Look at how my diamonds seem to sparkle on the garbage can

Chorus:
God bless the American housewife
How she does it I'll never know
God bless the American housewife
She could use a miracle for sure
God bless the American housewife
Cleanin' up the world for you and me
God bless the American housewife
(Ah ah ah ah ah)

Look at how my children play Commando in the cul-de-sac
Look at how my husband has survived another heart attack
Look at all the other mothers envious of all my things
Have to call the plummer 'cause my daughter flushed my wedding ring

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:
Look at me, I'm beautiful and glamorous in rubber gloves
Look how my tiara can be bent back to the shape it was
I can do the laundry and make dinner while I'm on the phone
Look at me, I'm sexy as the devil when I mow the lawn

Chorus 2x

How she does it I'll never know
God bless the American housewife

Left Behind, the hit series of books by Christian writers Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins is coming out as a video game in early November! I'm so stoked!

The game will ship to stores in time for Christmas." - http://www.leftbehind.com/

Song of the Week

"The Captain and the Kid"- Elton John

I’ve been out on this road some
Can’t help feeling I’ve been showing my friends around
I’ve seen it growing from next to nothing
Into a giant eating up your town

Called up the tealeaves and the tarots
Asked the gypsy what she sees in the palm of our hands
She saw a mountain and wild deer running
A crazy kid becoming a better man

But we stuck around for the fireworks
Waiting to explode
Shaped our futures, you a tumbleweed
And me on a yellow brick road
Pleasing the people some of the time
For better or for worse
An urban soul in a fine silk Suit
And a heart out west in a Wrangler shirt

And you can’t go back and If you try it fails
Looking up ahead I see a rusty nail
A sign hanging from it saying, “Truth for sale”
And that’s what we did
No lies at all just one more tale
About the Captain and the Kid

We’ve been missing at times in action
Can’t imagine what he said he might do for you
The devil got to come to the party sometimes
But he never got to wear our shoes

Oh we’ve conjured up what we created
Way back then when I was standing up in six-inch heels
Now you’re riding off into the sunset
And I’m still spinning like a Catherine wheel

But we stuck around for the battle
Waiting for a plan
To turn you into the Brown Dirt Cowboy
And me into a rocket man
It pleases the people some of the time
Digging into our roots
But I got a brand new pair of shoes
And you’re on a horse in old cowboy boots

And you can’t go back and if you try it fails
Looking up ahead I see a rusty nail
A sign hanging from it saying “Truth for sale”
And that’s just what we did
No lies at all just one more tale
About the Captain and the Kid

And you can’t go back and if you try it fails
Looking up ahead I see a rusty nail
A sign hanging from it saying “Truth for sale”
And that’s just what we did
No lies at all just one more tale
About the Captain and the Kid

DNS stack in Win2000

Windows 2000 WMI DNS Provider

DNS WMI Provider creates and populates WMI classes, which reference information contained in DNS zones and their resource records. The provider can be used to manipulate DNS servers, zones, and individual records. All necessary files are downloadable from the Microsoft FTP Site at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000/dnsprov.zip.

To install the provider, after extracting the content of the zip file, copy the dnsschema.mof to %systemroot%\system32\wbem\mof folder. The file should get automatically compiled and moved to the Good subfolder. Then copy the dnsprov.dll to the %systemroot%\system32\wbem folder and register it with the operating system by running: regsvr32 dnsprov.dll. You should get the confirmation of the successfull registration.

You can review the classes created by the MOF file compilation by either checking the documentation provided with the source files or by running any of the utilities included with WMI SDK (such as CIM WMI Studio) or WbemTest.exe, available on any computer with WMI installed (any Windows 2000 computer). DNS Provider populates a separate namespace in the WMI hierarchy - root\MicrosoftDNS. The namespace contains about 30 DNS related classes.

Along with the provider dll and MOF file, the downloaded zip file contains several VBScript examples, which allow you to accomplish most of the DNS related management tasks. For example, dnsserver.vbs can be used to:

- stop DNS server
cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs stop

- start DNS server
cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs start < - restart DNS server cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs restart - list DNS server configuration cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs LIST - list zones on the DNS server cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs zone - modify the configuration of the DNS server cscript //nologo dnsserver.vbs modify With dnszones.vbs, you can create, modify, add, delete, pause, update, resume, reload, and refresh DNS zones. dnsrecord.vbs allows you to add, delete, modify, and list resource records. http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/1476601

TiVo & PVR

The days of VCR's is coming to an end only to be replaced by these neat little devices knonw as TiVo or PVR's or DVR's (depending who your provider is). Basically they allow you to record real time shows for late viewing (like a VCR) but they also allow u to pause a show in the middle of it, or fast forward or rewind said show all in real time.

This is a great invention, although like most great inventions it has it's pros & cons:

Pros:
- ability to watch a show at your leisure, allowing for interuptions
- ability to record shows while you are out for later viewing
- ability to set recording times on continuous so it will ALWAYS record your show for you
- ability to fast forward over commercials if you start watching a show five minutes later that it's actual start time.

Cons:
- It can now take twice as long to watch a half hour show as when a family of five sits down inevitably a few will need to pee and thus the show will be paused
- It will not record your show if it is at a slightly later time or a game runs overtime into your show's time unless u tell it to tape ALL occurences of the show on every channel
- There is no way to get the information off the PVRs except having a TV card in your computer with S video in and out
- It allows people to be lazy and watch more TV because they can watch it at their convenience with no fuss, no dealing with "remembering to record a show" it's just there for them.

SunRocket VoIP

A customer calls me at work the other day and is having infinite amount of trouble with her computers network, she is calling from her cell phone so we procede to powercycle all her equipment (turn it off and on again.) She says she has no router, I believe her, but her computer doesn't work.

The IP addy is a 192, so there is obviously a router, after much inquisition it is determined she has VoIP by SunRocket. Now I've never heard of this company but she says she has lots of problems with the router and I suggest she call SunRocket. She says she can't, she doesn't know the number.

I of course think that I perhaps can find the number for her, so I check our knowledge base, nothing. So I google it, it brings up webpages, all of which are dead links! Not surf controlled, or being maitenanced but dead.

I came home and checked the site again thinking it was some kind of surfcontrol at work, nothing, nothing on any of the sunrocket.com sites. nothing of any value when you googled "sunrocket+support" just nothing. So this woman was left to try to find the manual that came with her original router and I was left frustrated.

So the long and short of this tale is that if I were you I WOULD NOT go with SunRocket VoIP!

*note, I have since tried the website again and it is again functioning. the tech support # is 1-800-786-0132.

9/11

Where were you on 9/11? It was one of those unique moments in history where everyone who was aware of the event, Nort Americans in particular, can tell about where they were at that moment. Other such moment include the moon landing, the assasination of JFK, the death of princess Di and other such monumental events they will undoubtedly be remembered as factors shaping that age.

I was at Bible College in the coffee shop having a job interview for housekeeping. The TV came on and there was a large group of people gathered around it watching. I have to tell you I didn't understand the magnitude of the situation at the time and thought perhaps the explosion was part of a hoax or a movie and I thought it looked really "cool" as one does when any good Hollywood explosion happens. Later I felt very guilty for my naivety over the tragedy I was seeing unfold.

I don't think that people would be wrong in saying that event help shaped our generation. Now airport security is at an all-time high, now there is a "war on terrorism and everyone is on the alert for "terrorists". That's the word all over the news, even today, "terrorism". It's sad that we've become such a paranoid society and it's even sadder that we have due cause to be so paranoid.

Song of the Week

"Have You Forgotten" - Darryl Worley

I hear people sayin'. We Don't need this war.
I say there's some things worth fightin' for.
What about our freedom, and this piece of ground?
We didn't get to keep 'em by backin' down.
They say we don't realize the mess we're gettin' in
Before you start preachin' let me ask you this my friend.

Chorus
Have you forgotten, how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten, when those towers fell
We had neighbors still inside goin through a livin hell
And you say we shouldn't worry bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

You took all the footage off my T.V.
Said it's too disturbin for you and me
It'll just breed anger is what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it everyday
Some say this country just out lookin' for a fight
Well after 9/11 man I'd have to say right.

Chorus
Have you forgotten, how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell
We had neighbors still inside goin' through a livin' hell
And we vow to get the ones behind Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

I've been there with the soldiers
Who've gone away to war
you can bet they remember just what they're fightin' for

Have you forgotten
All the people killed
Yes some went down like heroes
In that Pennsylvania field
Have you forgotten
About our Pentagon
All the loved ones that we lost
And those left to carry on
Don't you tell me not to worry 'bout Bin Laden

Have you forgotten?

Have you forgotten?

Have you forgotten?!

HELP US SAVE THE INTREPID FOX!

Hey guys, this is a re-post from my friend Willow's blog, if you all could sign the petition at the end I'd appreciat it.

From: Willow (http://www.xanga.com/WillowSynRavyn)
Those of you who know me may be aware that I'm pretty serious into the alternative scene. The main focal point of the scene, for myself and many others, is the Intrepid Fox pub, located at 99 Wardour Street, Soho. Not only is this a thriving business, but it is also where my church is located.

My church, Asylum (www.asylumlondon.com) is a ministry geared toward those in the alternative scene...punks, goths, bikers, metallers, rockers, skinheads etc etc. It's a very important and unique ministry that certainly has merit.

Due to the excessive redevelopment of the west end, the block on which the Intrepid Fox is located has been bought and will be redeveloped into flats. This means that Asylum will have to find a new home. What is worse, the manager and his wife who have lived above the pub for 17 years have been told to vacate the premesis on three weeks notice. They have been given three weeks to start their life from scratch. The Fox is literally their home and their livelyhood, and it was not their decision for the pub to be sold.

This also means that the entire staff of the Fox have been left jobless.

On top of all this, there are very few venues like the Fox where people in the scene can go and feel comfortable. I for one get turned away from venues because I typically dress "too alternatively", so the Fox provides a safe and comfortable atmosphere for not only me, but for hundreds of other alternative people. Without the Fox we will be left to our own devices, which I'm sure nobody wants.

Below I have postedm, below, a link for a petition that is going around in an attempt to reverse this decision. I have also posted a link to a piece that was in the Evening Standard regarding the Fox. It says a lot of good things.

Above all, please pray for the manager and his wife, the staff of the Fox, the patrons and for Asylum.

Thanks Everyone!!Fox Petition!

Machismo

A friend of mine from Japan asked me what the word "machismo" meant when I used it in a sentence. Now there's something I'd never really thought about... what does machismo mean? I guess it means like bravado, another word that sounds good and means little. Perhaps it means manliness, acting out like a man should, there's another loose phrase. Okay then how about brave and strong and powerful, but that doesn't really do it justice either... So I, of course, turned to my good friend Wikipedia to find out what this word actually "means"

The long and short of it is that it is a word originating in the Mexican, meaning:

"2 A man who considers the masculine sex as naturally superior to the feminine, glorifies those traits traditionally ascribed to men and seeks to control and dominate women or to demonstrate his strength, virility, etc., to them [ellas] and to other men: Mexican macho, "Take it like the machos!" 3 Someone who is brave, strong or demonstrates some of the traits traditionally ascribed to men: "I am very macho, sons of the chingada!", a very macha woman 4 A lo macho [in a macho manner] (coloq.) without guile or trickery, with bravery: "Are you telling it to me a lo macho?" 5 A man, specially when seeking to emphasize his sexuality: "He came back made a macho tall and strong..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machismo

So there you have it. LOL!

"Losing ground in the battle of the bulge"

I found this study on obesity in Canada over the past 25 years, as is not surprising obesity rates have gone up in children. A few particularly interesting parts of the article:

"Let’s all turn back the clock to that mythical time when kids started the day doing chores before eating a healthy breakfast and then walking five kilometres to school – uphill, in a snowstorm. Back then, kids ended the day walking five kilometres home from school – again uphill – to do some more chores. "

"Fast forward to 1979. It’s the beginning of what would turn out to be the 25-year-long Canadian Community Health Survey, which looked at obesity in children and adults. "

"At the beginning of the study, three per cent of children between the ages of two and 17 were considered obese. Among adults, the rate was 14 per cent. "

"At the end of the study in 2004, those rates were substantially higher. Among children, nine per cent were considered obese. Another 20 per cent were considered overweight, meaning that almost 30 per cent of youngsters were dealing with weight problems. "

"The survey found that children and adolescents who reported eating fruits and vegetables five or more times a day were substantially less likely to be overweight or obese than those who consumed them less frequently. Forty-one per cent of children and adolescents reported they ate at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

Not surprisingly, the survey also found kids between the ages of six and 17 were more likely to be obese if they spent a lot of their spare time watching TV, playing video games or using the computer. "

"Meanwhile, another study found that Old Order Mennonite children tend to be fitter, stronger and leaner than other Canadian kids – even despite a lack of phys-ed classes or organized sports.

The children also don’t have access to video games, computers and television. What they do have access to is up to 18 minutes more of moderate or vigorous physical activity per day compared to most other children.

They also have access to regular chores. "

"As part of its Healthy Children Healthy Futures child health initiative, the Strang Cancer Prevention Center in New York City has come up with its eight habits of healthy kids. They are:
• Spend at least one hour a day being physically active.
• Spend less than two hours a day watching TV and playing video and computer games.
• Eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day.
• Snack more on healthy foods and less on junk foods and sweets.
• Drink or eat at least three low fat dairy foods a day.
• Drink at least two glasses/bottles of water a day instead of soft drinks.
• Eat less fast food (no more than twice a week) and make healthier fast food choices.
• Eat smaller portions.

Health Canada’s Family Guide to Physical Activity for children lays out two goals:
• Increase the time currently spent on physical activity by a total of at least 30 minutes per day. • Reduce “non-active” time spent on TV, video, computer games and surfing the internet, starting with at least 30 minutes less per day."

"The guide suggests that increasing physical activity by 30 minutes a day is a lot easier than it sounds. It can be done in bouts as short as five or 10 minutes each. "

"The key is to get people moving. "

Steve Irwin's Dead?

Steve Irwin, fondly known as the Crocodile Hunter died yesterday in a freak accident. I used the term "freak" quite liberally here. More accurate might be to say "he died doing something he loved". He was stung in the chest by a stingray that was spooked while he was filming a television program on the Great Barrier Reef off far north Queensland . Irwin allegedly pulled the barb from his own chest before slipping into unconsciousness.

I hope that he died saying "Crikey" or at least surprised that the stingray, that is a known poisonous creature, would have attacked a human unprovoked in the good Steve Irwin fashion.

Song of the Week

"Living Together" - Amy Dalley

Pay the bills
cut the grass
someone forgot the trash
ohh the talks we've had
about the toilet seat
a few anniversarys
fights and appologies
sometimes what love needs is
a good referee

I'm his best friend
I'm his roommate
I'm his partner and his wife
He's my stand in date for dinner
who stays over every night

Bein married ain't the struggle
we could stay that way forever
the hardest part is
living together

Pile of clothes
stack of plates
who's turn is it anyway
that frozen chicken egg
ain't gonna cook itself
how much did that cost
who forgot to walk the dog
ones about to freeze to death
ones about to melt

I'm his best friend
I'm his roommate
I'm his partner and his wife
He's my stand in date for dinner
who stays over every night

Bein married ain't the struggle
we could stay that way forever
the hardest part is
living together

It's beautiful
but sadly
it passion and it's don't touch me
it's bein stubborn
it's givin in
and waking up to do it all again

I'm his best friend
I'm his roommate
I'm his partner and his wife
He's my stand in date for dinner
who stays over every night

Bein married ain't the struggle
we could stay that way forever
the hardest part is
living together

519 area code

Where I'm from in Ontario, Cambridge, the area code is (and always has been) 519. In an upsetting turn of events Bell has decided to assign a 2nd area code to the area as it has grown to exceed the amount of numbers in the 519 area code. Because of this whenever dialing a local number we now have to dial 519 before the number.

The truly ironic part is that no one knows what the new area code will be, nor will it take affect til next year so right now dialing 10 digits for every call is not only annoying, but redundant.

Harper's Magazine

My cousin got in as an art interm at Harper's magazine. Apparently her name is going to be listed in the credits. I'm quite stoked for her.

Problem is I haven't ever read Harper's magazine and I don't really know what kind of a mag it is... so I looked into it.

"Harper's Magazine (or simply Harper's) is a monthly general-interest magazine covering literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts from a progressive, moderate left perspective in a fashion often not found in the ordinary news-media. It is the second oldest continuously-published monthly magazine (the oldest magazine being Scientific American) in the United States, with a current circulation of slightly more than 220,000.[1] Its editor is Roger Hodge, who replaced longtime editor Lewis Lapham on March 31, 2006.[2] Harper's has won numerous National Magazine and other awards.[3]"
