Books to Film

A list of books that have been turned into films from abebooks.com

(although in my humble opinion the book is almost always better than the movie! i.e. Harry Potter, Eragon, A Walk to Remember, The Bridge to Terabithia, The Lord of the Rings, Willy Wonka, James and the Giant Peach, Peter Pan, etc. etc.)

http://www.abebooks.com/docs/Community/Featured/books-film.shtml?cm_ven=nl&cm_cat=com-2007-07&cm_pla=KV&cm_ite=kv

It is neat to see the list though as sometimes one doesn't know the book existed and only knows of the movie.

Song of the Week

"Walk Like an Egyptian" - The Bangles

All the old paintings on the tombs
They do the sand dance don't you know
If they move too quick (oh whey oh)
They're falling down like a domino

All the bazaar men by the Nile
They got the money on a bet
Gold crocodiles (oh whey oh)
They snap their teeth on your cigarette

Foreign types with the hookah pipes say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

Blonde waitresses take their trays
They spin around and they cross the floor
They've got the moves (oh whey oh)
You drop your drink then they bring you more

All the school kids so sick of books
They like the punk and the metal band
When the buzzer rings (oh whey oh)
They're walking like an Egyptian

All the kids in the marketplace say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

Slide your feet up the street bend your back
Shift your arm then you pull it back
Life is hard you know (oh whey oh)
So strike a pose on a Cadillac

If you want to find all the cops
They're hanging out in the donut shop
They sing and dance (oh whey oh)
Spin the clubs cruise down the block

All the Japanese with their yen
The party boys call the Kremlin
And the Chinese know (oh whey oh)
They walk the line like Egyptian

All the cops in the donut shop say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
Walk like an Egyptian

Facebook Fraud?

This article is regarding an impending lawsuit against facebook claiming the creators stole the idea from a former colleague. If the law suit goes through it could be the end of facebook, which would be a real shame!

"Judge In US Delays Facebook Ruling

Updated: 08:37, Thursday July 26, 2007
A judge in the United States has delayed ruling on claims the founder of the social networking website Facebook stole his ideas from rivals.
Delay over decision

Mark Zuckerberg has been taken to court by the three creators of ConnectU.

They have accused him of fraud, copyright infringement and misappropriation of trade secrets.

ConnectU says Zuckerberg agreed to write some code for their site when they were all students at Harvard.

But he never finished the job and then launched Facebook in 2004.

It now has 31m users compared to ConnectU's 70,000.

Last year Facebook turned down a £500m buyout offer from Yahoo.

ConnectU wants to the court to shut down Facebook and order it to pay them its profits.

Lawyers for Facebook say Connect-U's founders have no evidence to support their claims.

The judge adjourned the case until August 8, saying he needed more information before he could make a ruling.

"Each of them had different interests and activities," they wrote.

"Only one of them had an idea significant enough to build a great company. That one person was Mark Zuckerberg." "

Students in Trouble Over Facebook Entries

An interesting article about privacy & facebook... I've highlighted some points:

"Students In Trouble Over Facebook Entries

Updated: 14:59, Tuesday July 17, 2007
Oxford University has relied on 'private' photos on social websites to discipline students, according to reports.
Facebook not always private

Students are now being advised to alter privacy settings on sites such as Facebook and Myspace.

Alex Hill, a maths and philosophy student, was reportedly charged by the Oxford disciplinary body with disorderly conduct, after incriminating photos posted on her Facebook profile were used against her.

Citing problems with antisocial behaviour, a spokesperson for Oxford University said that "Proctors wish to take the steps available to them to identify and discipline the culprits."

It is not only universities using social sites to learn more about people - employers have also been relying on information gleaned from user profiles when making employment decisions.

A survey conducted by Viadeo found that one in five employers have used the internet to find personal information about candidates, and a quarter of recruiters have rejected applicants based on their findings.

A recent graduate, who wished to remain unknown, told us: "Many of my friends are now worrying about all the dodgy photos on Facebook from their time at uni.

"You've got to delete photos, or better still never put them online, to guarantee they won't get out."

Students are being advised that the only way to prevent sensitive information from getting into the wrong hands is to keep it offline altogether.

The problem is not just affecting people in the UK - current Miss Jersey, Amy Polumbo, almost lost her crown after potentially embarrassing photos of her appeared on Facebook.

"This was meant to be private," the 22-year-old said. "It was supposed to be between my friends and I."

Song of the Week

"Grace Kelly" - Mika

Do I attract you?
Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty?
Am I too flirty?
Do I like what you like?

I could be wholesome
I could be loathsome
I guess Im a little bit shy
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me without making me try?

I try to be like Grace Kelly
But all her looks were too sad
So I try a little Freddie
Ive gone identity mad!

I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you walk out the door!

How can I help it
How can I help it
How can I help what you think?
Hello my baby
Hello my baby
Putting my life on the brink
Why dont yo like me

Skor Bites

For the longest time I was convinced that a conspiracy was in progress, a big giant conspiracy to rid the world of Skor Bites! I of course, fearing for the worst, stocked up on Skor Bites & Skor bars... but as I had feared the supply of Skor bits dwindled from the shelves. It got to the point that I could no longer find the yummy bite sized treats anywhere! Not Wal-Mart, Zellers, Sobeys, Zehrs, Food Basics, other such groceries, Max stores, 7-11's, random tiny variety stores & even the theatre where they normally sold them over-priced in smaller bags, there were none to be found!

I lamented over my loss... until I figured out what had happened to the Skor Bites... they had been replaced by Skor miniatures.... basically squares of toffee covered in chocolate about 1/4 the size of an actual Skor bar!

Now I'm not thrilled by this because I can do math and figure out how many of these miniatures would equal a real Skor bar whereas with the bites it was very hard to tell and a lot less guilt-laden... but I am happy that there is a smaller version of my favourite snack available for munching during movies. :-)

Marble Lemonade

The Japanese restaurant by my house sells some really good Marble Lemonade, this is another one of those "if you get the chance to try it.... do so!" things! It's really really good, it tastes like Sprite but more carbonated, almost a cross between Sprite & lemon/lime Jones soda with added fizz! The neatest part is that it is sealed with a marble and come with a popper to push the marble into the neck of the bottle so the drink can be drunk.

It's called: Shirakiku - Ramune Soda

You can also apparently buy it off Amazon:

Song of the Week

"Chasing Cars" - Snow Patrol

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world

I don't quite know
How to say, how I feel
Those three words
'l say too much
But not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
[Chasing Cars lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how is well
Just know that these things will never
Change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world

Joey Fatone

So remember N'Sync? Wonder what that singer Joey is up to nowadays? Well.... I saw him on the telly the other night as the host for "Singing Bee" this pseudo-reality/game show type thing where people must correctly sing songs without lyrics to win... he's come a long way! LOL
