God or the Girl...

There's a new series on TLC called "God or the Girl" it's about people who are wanting to go into the Catholic priesthood so they have to choose "God or the girl". (As Catholic priests are s'posed to be celebit.) This show idea kind of frustrates me.... actually in general reality TV has been frustrating me lately.

I totally see the point of shows like "Survivor", the first season anyways, "Fear Factor" or "Amazing Race". Even the shows like "Trading Spouses", "Beauty & the Geek", or "Big Brother" are interesting. It's interesting to see social experiments in which people who don't normally jive are put together and forced to do jus that.

Shows like "Nanny 911", "Honey We're Killing the Kids", "Clean Sweep" or "Trading Spaces" also serve a purpose in that they teach people how to do better than what they are doing. How to raise their kids better, or keep better care over their homes.

The problem I'm having with reality TV these days is shows like "God or the Girl" or "Little People, Big World" in which they take common-day occurances like people become priests or little people (midgets) living in real society. There's nothing spectacular about these phenomenon, they've been happening for hundreds of years without needing to be glamourized or televised (I know only this has been an option for less than 100 years) it's just so frustrating... every hour you spend watching someone else's life is an hour you can't spend living your own!

I won't lie to you, I have spend hours watching all of the above mentioned shows... but it is because of this I can come to these conclusions. Reality TV should focus on the extremes and ovscures of reality, not the everday ho-hums!
